Meghalaya High court
On a resolution adopted by the Assam Legislative Assembly the Gauhati High Court was established on 9th September, 1947. This court was established for Assam province. Later in the year 1948, the Assam High court was established. It was inaugurated by Sri Harilal Kania, the then Chief Justice of India on 5th April, 1948. Sir. R.F. Lodge was the first Chief Justice of the Assam high court. Initially the Assam High Court would hear its cases at Shillong but later shifted to Gauhati from 14th April, 1948.In the year 1986, the Gauhati High Court became a common High Court for the State of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. The Gauhati high court had the main seat at Guwahati in Assam and six outlying benches for the rest of the states under its Jurisdiction.
On 4th February, 1995 a permanent bench was established for Shillong as a result of the efforts of some leading members of the Shillong Bar Association.
On 8th March, 2002, the then Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri. Arun Jaitely, laid the foundation stone for the New High Court Building in Shillong at the Hermitage compound. From 2nd March, 2010, the court started functioning from the new building. On March 23rd, 2013 the High Court of Meghalaya was formed and was inaugurated on the March 25th, 2013.
