In the year 1986, the Gauhati High Court became a common High Court for the State of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. The Gauhati high court had the main seat at Guwahati in Assam and six outlying benches for the rest of the states under its Jurisdiction.
On 4th February, 1995 a permanent bench was established for Shillong as a result of the efforts of some leading members of the Shillong Bar Association.
On 8th March, 2002, the then Union Minister of Law and Justice Shri. Arun Jaitely, laid the foundation stone for the New High Court Building in Shillong at the Hermitage compound. From 2nd March, 2010, the court started functioning from the new building. On March 23rd, 2013 the High Court of Meghalaya was formed and was inaugurated on the March 25th, 2013.
