1864, Shillong was given the status of the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills. Shillong was an integral part of the erstwhile British provincial state of Assam, during the the colonial period and the town served as the capital even after independence.
According to historical records, the beautiful town also served as the summer capital of Eastern Bengal for several years.During the 1897 destruction, Shillong also suffered huge destruction.Shillong served as the capital of the new administration, only after Meghalaya attained Statehood.
It is also believed that Shyllong, a handsome youth was born to a virgin human mother in the Bisi village that located near Shillong and this handsome youth none other than the Shillong deity.
