Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya , till the year 1864 was a small village. It was only after the year 
1864, Shillong was given the status of the new civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills. Shillong was an integral part of the erstwhile British provincial state of Assam, during the the colonial period and the town served as the capital even after independence.
 
According to historical records, the beautiful town also served as the summer capital of Eastern Bengal for several years.During the 1897 destruction, Shillong also suffered huge destruction.Shillong served as the capital of the new administration, only after Meghalaya attained Statehood.

It is also believed that Shyllong, a handsome youth was born to a virgin human mother in the Bisi village that located near Shillong and  this handsome youth none other than the Shillong deity.

Total transfer of land by Syiem to Mylliem then to the British. Building activity starts to accommodate army & migrant population

Municipality constituted under Bengal Municipality Act

Rapid urban growth due to formation of municipality and due to the establishment of State and Central Government offices

1940

As Nongthymmai and Mawlai become census towns, they are included in Urban Agglomeration

1961

Shillong becomes the capital of newly formed
state of Meghalaya
