Transportation in Shillong

Shillong being one of the busiest tourist destinations of the Northeast is well connected by road and airways. Shillong however, does not have a rail route and the nearest rail head is Guwahati which is well connected with all major cities of India.

The Umroi Airport:

Umroi is about 35 km from Shillong and currently Air India operates some flights from this airport. Taxis/ Buses are available from Shillong to Umroi and back.

The Gopinath Bordoloi Airport:

However, one should opt for  Gopinath Bordoloi Airport which is 128 km from Shillong. It is connected to rest of India with regular flights. Shared cabs are available at the rate of Rs 500 per personOne can also hire Tata Sumo to reach Shillong from Guwahati Airport. The cab will drop you off at Police Bazaar from where you can get a ride to almost any part of Shillong. On the way, from Guwahati to Shillong you can stop half way at Nongpoh to get some rest and refreshments for yourself. You can also hire taxis, sumos or shared cabs that are available outside the airport or you can go with the service provided by Tourist Information Centre, Police Bazaar and Meghalaya Tourism Information Centre, Guwahati Airport on which information is given below:

There is a Helicopter service available from Guwahati to Tura and Tura to Shillong on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from Guwahati to Shillong and Shillong to Guwahati daily except on a Sunday. It takes 20 minutes to reach Shillong from Guwahati. This means of transportation is very convenient and economical.

Shillong is very well connected by a good network of roads with all the major cities in the neighboring states and the important cities in the country.The capital city of Meghalaya is accessible by two major highways, NH40 connecting Guwahati and Shillong and NH 44 that connects Shillong with Tripura. Taxi Services in Shillong
Black and yellow shared taxis are available in Shillong. These are faster mode of transportation and usually ply within the city. These are always shared and the fares may vary from Rs 5/- to Rs 15/- maximum. If a passenger wants to hire a taxi, the driver will not pick up any more passengers, and in that case the rates would be higher. One should fix the fare before travel.
